The license complexity with which businesses face rising by the continual introduction of new contracts for software use. This makes it increasingly difficult for IT managers to get a grip on their IT estate. On top of these challenges, GasTerra faced with major changes in the IT landscape by switching to a VDI environment. Snow Software helps the organization to manage the necessary licenses.
GasTerra is an international company trading in natural gas. The company operates in the European energy market and has an important share in the Dutch gas supply. For fifty years, GasTerra supplies gas to large Dutch industries, energy companies, trading houses and foreign markets (exports). To realize this puts a team of over one hundred employees in the sale of natural gas in the right direction to lead.
GasTerra uses many IT systems, both for office automation systems and systems that are specifically required for the trade in natural gas. GasTerra has a monopoly on the purchase of the Groningen gas and sells about 40 percent of all other natural gas extracted on Dutch soil. Here is a great state interests involved. Compliancy is therefore very important for the organization.
“We have set an example and that is why we want to ensure that we are on the right way to proceed in all areas,” Ted Wildenberg, ICT contract manager tells GasTerra . “That also applies to our software use. We want to make sure that we pay for all licenses that we use, but obviously not for more licenses than we need.
License in vDI environment
in 2012 GasTerra decided to move to a vDI environment. GasTerra employees are therefore no longer dependent on a single device but can log on all devices. This allows for more flexibility and a more efficient way of working for all employees. For GasTerra software usage does this change mean that since then, no software licenses per Unit, but licenses per user. “This move brought much change triggered around the required licensing,” said Wildenberg. “To ensure that we have the appropriate licenses and the right number of licenses is to implement a Software Asset Management (SAM) solution that also use to measure in a VDI environment is essential.
Before GasTerra sea went with Snow Software, the organization made been using a different sam solution. “After the big changes in our IT landscape in 2012, but it was not suitable for a VDI environment,” said Wildenberg. “Because of this we walked to his risk incompliant. This is what we wanted to avoid. So we decided to switch to another provider with a solution that is decorated in a VDI environment. ”
In collaboration with licensing specialist Infra Control, GasTerra has switched to Snow License Manager. Wildenberg: “To make sure that Snow License Manager is indeed fit for our IT landscape, we implemented the first solution on the basis of a proof of concept (PoC). For one month, we have worked with Snow License Manager and in that time the sam solution proved himself. Therefore, we are then officially launched the project. ” The solution helps to maintain compliance GasTerra the licensing of vendors in their VDI environment. GasTerra is through real-time insight into software usage more effectively utilize all existing licenses.
More accurate view of software use
GasTerra sees so far a number of concrete results. In a VDI environment, an organization takes off licenses for the number of users rather than devices. You can never pay for more licenses than the number of users. We now come to the conclusion that we did so well in the past, “said Wildenberg. “So we paid for licenses that we did not need. By here to amend it, we save costs.
GasTerra also has a more accurate view of the software that is actually used. Wildenberg, “We have also come to the conclusion that we did not use a number of software packages. This software is superfluous and can be removed. Because we have a better view of our software usage can we object, compliant, better reach.
Valuable information
“We are very pleased with Snow Software” says Wildenberg. “The implementation went very quickly and it is relatively easy to work with Snow License Manager. However, employees must get used to the new solution. It provides our organization namely lots of information. Snow License Manager can for instance show whether we have licenses per device or per user, how many people use systems, the licensing models of software vendors look and updates have been made. It is very valuable to us to have all this information, so we make sure our staff to handle it efficiently here to know
