EINDHOVEN – For months suspended special cameras, sound meters and software at Stratumseind in Eindhoven. They register movements, sounds, but also social media, such as Tweets or Facebook. City Pulse aim of the project is the prevention of violence, fights or other incidents. The police hope the system to be able to take preventive action.
It is reminiscent of the futuristic Hollywood movie Minority Report. The tough policeman Tom Cruise looks with the help of psychics and software that a jealous man is about to murder his wife. The man was arrested before he could carry out his plan.
We watch you do not
Eindhoven can almost predict the software project City Pulse that a situation get out of hand foot. That people are about to fight, for example. “We do not spy on you. We do not even know it’s you,” said Albert Seubers Atos, the company that has taken the initiative for the project.
“We love movements monitored. in crowds and we keep sounds in the holes. If we cry heard and run ten people away, then there would be something might be going on.” The police may then with the camera or in person, take a look. “The police can thus more wisely.” Also, social media monitored. “We do that with keywords that fit Stratumseind,” says Seubers. “For example, if we see a lot of tweets of football supporters PEC Zwolle who flock to the Stratumseind, we keep it in mind.”
System is not waterproof
But City Pulse is not waterproof and can perhaps not always properly assess when a situation is suspicious, Seubers gives also increasing. “It is a learning system that is still developing.” But the system knows as Seubers or the difference between people who attack each other cheerfully yelling at the poor and people who want to fight. “It can recognize the different sounds as aggressive or happy.”
Of City Pulse has also managed to avoid the last few months many incidents Stratumseind, Seubers can not say. Since it is still too early for that. “But what we could register it, is that at the homage of PSV to champions were hardly incidents. And the system has already contributed to a smarter use of the police.”
