Customers want real-time processing of their application. The current databases are not suitable for this task. Who is going to fix this? The answer to these questions comes from a radical development angle, read open-source
Open Source Software (OSS) and the Open Source Project (OSP) always been the driving force behind the development of the most innovative, been disruptive products. Despite the positive characteristics, we see that open source for years with the problem concerning low uptake among companies dealing with. But here comes to an end!
Game Changers
The Open Compute Project (OCP) is an initiative a few years ago by Facebook, has been established. It is a concept that makes use of Open Source Software and Open Source Project. This concept can be seen as a disruptive product that part of the business model of major suppliers of data center infrastructure such as HP, DELL, IBM will be seriously jeopardized.
The market for data center infrastructure consists of 77% hardware and 23 % with software sales of $ 114 billion (source: Synergy Research Group). The OCP concept opens fire on both areas, hardware and software. The concept is so powerful that all major vendors such as Microsoft, HP, Dell, IBM itself (forced) hereby have connected. An OCP-based data center is significantly beneficial, contains highly effective features, and is economical in consumption of energy and other resources such as hardware and software.
In addition OCP we know other developments and solutions such as open-source project Aero Solve (on Airbnb), open-source projects at Uber (like Uber Tooth) Docker (containerization), Open Stack, Hadoop, Open Daylight (SDN), Rock Forge (identity stack) and cAdvisor. One by one, solutions and initiatives that something radical revolution in the ICT landscape or an industry. Interestingly, the features and capabilities of an open-source solution later be transferred or copied by other closed-sourced vendors.
Challenges of open-source
Open source offers many opportunities . Yet it has much trouble finding its way into businesses. This is partly due to weak marketing around the capabilities of the solution and also lack of knowledge in organizations, management and development. The interoperability of the chain and vendor lock-in, we can further identify the challenges to adoption of open source. This vendor lock-in is of course carefully created and maintained by the closed software manufacturers. But this is going to be different.
The offensive of open-source
Open source will come back strongly in the coming years. Open source and the Internet have given birth to cloud computing and cloud computing together in turn allows for huge offensive of open source. What? Software as a Service (SaaS) is the magic word. More and more organizations use a SaaS service. Many companies find a SaaS solution interesting because they want to take advantage of the flexible capabilities without the need to make themselves more pressure on issues such as management and development. This is exactly what the adoption of open-source needs.
Major change
Today’s challenges require a different kind of resources than what we already know, a ‘major change’ . New programming and other software features and / or DataBase Gen2 with real-time processing of information include the preconditions that are necessary for solving big data problems and other problems. Suppliers with their closed-source products do not provide the necessary space for disruptive developments. One has to tread off the beaten track, this is precisely the strength and quality of open source. The large vendors with their closed-sourced products to the legacy of the future.
It is the task of CIO`s to pay more attention to their architecture to the plug-in and interoperability in the chain getting ready to make the adoption of open-source SaaS products. Open-source comes up with appropriate solutions. But is your architecture suited to the new solutions?
