NASA improved autofocus Mars rover Curiosity via software update – Tweakers

NASA has managed to provide the Curiosity rover currently on Mars clocking of improved software. This trolley can be camera for chemical analysis of materials focusing better.

NASA confirmed the successful software update on his website. Curiosity has a device, the so-called ChemCam, aboard which the chemical composition of the materials can be analyzed. It works with a laser which is to be focused on the material to be analyzed. According to NASA worked the software automatically ‘focus’ is not quite right, so decided to create new software.

what an over-the-space’ update can be called, the software Curiosity renewed. That operation proved successful: the ChemCam can now also select the best focus distance and on this basis to generate data for chemical analysis. Also the photos taken by Curiosity improved according to NASA with the new software. That does Curiosity by first taking a number of focus distances than to select the one that provides the best focus.

This may be somewhat cumbersome work-around is needed because the original autofocus method of the Mars rover not longer working. Initially this was a special laser available that could measure the distance to the object, but this ‘rangefinder’ broke down. NASA had to invent something else.

Curiosity does research on the Martian surface to find out whether there are traces of life. Late last year, building blocks found which indicate that there have been possible life forms in the past, although there is still no concrete evidence
