id Software paid nearly Quake modders in 1995 – IGN Benelux

Not long ago Valve got a load of criticism. The owner of Steam would simply come asking for money mods, so they could pay the mud again. They were not the first with this idea, it turns out.

In 1995, though, says John Romero, co-founder of id Software, had his company plans to pay modders. They wanted to establish a platform for modders to share their creations for a contribution, of course.

“I am always confident that modders have to get money for their creations, ” says Romero to Gamesindustry.biz. ” The platform, called ID Net, would be maintained by us. We would choose the mods would come online ”

He continues: “.” We would modders then pay a certain amount of money depending on the traffic that generated this individual mod ”

Romero concludes: ” I think they should be rewarded. We do that in our game companies, why not go outside? ”

What do you think? Had Valve – if they had been able to also maintain their policies – may give money to the modders? Or mods should just be free? Let us know in the comments.
