Microsoft is working on software that predicts future crimes – NU.nl

This was reported by Fusion based on a webcast press conference Microsoft held earlier this year for the US police. The video was already published in August on Youtube, but in all that time only viewed a hundred times.

The video explains Microsoft program manager Jeff King out how the software works. With a complex algorithm could be made with an accuracy of 91 percent predictions based on standard information about prisoners.

“If the offender ties with a gang? Are they in rehabilitation? How many infringements they committed in prison, how many hours they have been in solitary confinement? Those kind of things,” King explains in the video out. On the basis of such information would Microsoft software with great accuracy can predict whether a prisoner shortly after release again the mistake of going in.

Similar to games

According to King, the algorithm similar to that in video games, in which the behavior of computer-controlled enemies is adapted to the behavior of the player.

Microsoft says versus Fusion that the program is still in development. The model based on standard information from detainees would only be a ‘proof of concept’.

Such developments can often count on criticism from experts. Who fear that governments in the future much will depend on algorithms that may have a discriminatory effect
