UvA researcher Xinyi Li developed a method to automatically evaluate the quality of Wikipedia pages. He presented his model in the “European Conference on Information Retrieval” in Vienna.
Wikipedia is the largest and most consulted online encyclopedia. Articles can be written or modified by anyone. This online encyclopedia is growing rapidly. Result is, however, that the quality of articles is not systematically guaranteed. All Wikipedia articles is just a small part manually quality assessed. In order to estimate the value of all the other pages, automatic evaluation methods are needed.
Authors indicative of quality
Current methods for automatic review of quality based on the content of the article. Li makes his method, in addition to the content, use of the information which has contributed to an article. Most articles are written namely by multiple people, but not everyone contribute equally. Also shows that the majority of the authors only writes about a limited number of subjects.
By the next content also the expertise and the number of contributions from authors observe, the method of Li is better able to assess the quality of an item than methods that only look at content.
Li’s software would – in theory – can be used to demonstrate automated alerts for ‘low quality’.
