Is’ software defined workspace (SDW) is really something new or is it a clever marketing trick, to hitchhike the hype of the Software Defined Network (SDN) and software defined data center (sdd)
?
During the Citrix annual partner event in Las Vegas where the main partners are invited, located at the beginning of the new year to hear where the focus of Citrix and what new innovations will dominate the year 2015, this year was the main message of the positioning of the ‘software defined workspace (SDW).
You might think that this is primarily a marketing term, because the major competitor of Citrix, VMware, has been very successful with their ‘Ssftware defined datacenter (sdd) strategy, now as industry term has been adopted by almost all vendors, including VMware’s competitors. Turned the ‘workspace’ not always to software?
Citrix can with this new term is indeed an innovation in motion, I believe. But in order to explain this, I would first like to clarify what the sdw is.
In the vision of Citrix traditional workspace as we know it (ie the world of laptops, virtual applications, desktops etc.), integrated with the world of the ‘internet of things’ (IoT). A workplace is not only about the IT tools you use, but also the space in which you work. Consider the location where you work, sitting at the desk where you, the lighting, heating, floor and so on
Valid use cases

It sounds good such a vision, but what does this mean? Everything starts with valid use cases.
Imagine that upon entering a meeting room automatically starts a virtual meeting, because the wireless network based location determination of mobile phones know the organizer within walked and retrieves the data from the meeting in the Outlook calendar. Or that the floor of the meeting room is equipped with ‘Luminous Carpets’ and there on the floor number is the virtual meeting which homeworkers can be dialed in.
Whether you are in an environment with flexible workplaces, based localization of the network and the credentials of staff, on a virtual desktop, a mobile can see where your immediate colleagues today have picked a desk. An app that you can also search for available office nearby.
Recently, we have also our first ‘Digital Ceiling’ project done. With LED lighting in buildings is powered by Power over Ethernet LAN switches. This may still be easier and more efficient power consumption measured and controlled, and the many sensors in such a ‘Digital Ceiling’ connected via the network.
The business outcomes of such solution are connected at this time, especially in the deployment of solutions that improve the efficiency. For example, the classification of people in an office building, which the heating and energy costs in real time can be reduced. The use cases that are coming in this area are lower occupancy building, energy, connecting IT and non-IT on the enterprise and feeding endpoints over the network. Besides the financial perspective appearance as energy-efficient buildings or generating the future, the fight for the best Breaam certification or highest level of CO2 reduction
System Integration 2.0
<-.! Text - ->
There is a world of possibilities of linking the heater with the lighting of linking the intelligent floor to traditional IT systems. That system integration 2.0. Implementing and configuring existing hardware and software is no longer good enough, because in addition to deploying and configuring an additional requirement is integration. Many IoT devices have namely different APIs and talk about different magnitudes. Requires knowledge of middleware and software development necessary to connect all in a ‘common language’ with each other.
These use cases are very recent and there are no industry standards for these links. The chance that in the short term does not seem very large, because the different worlds that do not know each other
Experience Program indispensable
.
As a supplier virtual workspace software Citrix recognizes this problem. The organization has a number of months ago an important, but rather under the radar done remained acquisition Octoblu. Octoblu is a middleware solution that allows easy system integration. See middleware as a kind of translation agency where every possible language spoken, translated into eg English so we can understand each other all.
Through Octoblu’s ‘drag and drop’ principle, several dozen different systems still together are connected. This is important because many of the larger deployment parties do not themselves have the core competence to build these interfaces themselves / programming. While Octoblu is a good starting point, a certain degree of API and programming experience in my opinion is essential in larger sections
