Software for trace evidence – Technical Weekly

It is not just about technology development, but also to come to an international standard for the evaluation of trace evidence. ‘Forensic scientists do based on knowledge and experience statements about the likelihood of their results. They will state the extent to which they can attach the rails to a suspect. Increasingly, these researchers use data sets and statistical models to support their statement numerically, “explains project leader Annabel Bolck, statistician at the NFI.

Within the different areas of research, the researchers work with their own data and software, but this software is often not validated. “By adding different statistical models together and validation, we hope to develop a single standard for all traces except dna research, ‘Bolck says.

The basic statistical models that are processed in the software are already set and during the kick-off meeting is here one model chosen to start with. Leon Aronson, forensic software developer at the NFI, will process this model in his first design of the user interface. During the second meeting in the summer he will present the first draft and the participating parties can make adjustments where necessary.

Both Bolck as Aronson are positive about the first meeting and collaboration with the various research areas. “The preliminary work has already been done, so that saves a lot. In addition, all parties are willing to give up their own ideas to come to a standard, “says Aronson. Over two years, first with the software experts should be able to work. “However, I expect that there is still plenty to improve after two years to the software.
