Version 4.0.5 of Paint.NET is true. As the name suggests, this program requires the .NET framework to be able to do its job. It started as a study of the Washington State University, replacing the Windows built-Paint, but now includes a lot of functionality that we look back in broader commercial packages. Version 4.0 works a lot faster, especially on multicore processors, but it has at least Windows 7 as system requirement. Version 4.0.5 is called a bugfix release and fixes a handful of problems.

- Subtraction fashion in the Magic Wand tool was generating Instead BA or AB.

- Crash (Access Violation Exception) on some systems When initializing the canvas for hardware accelerated rendering. It will still crash but then switch to software rendering for the next startup, will-which then avoid the crashing.
