Europe attracts million for control of free software – Security.nl

The European Parliament has allocated one million euros to check the “free software” used by Parliament and the European Commission. Free software is software that users certain rights in respect of change and redistribute the source code of grants.

“While these organizations are bound to proprietary file formats, is a big part of their infrastructure free software based, “the Free Software Foundation Europe (FSFE). Through the announced audit project will to vulnerabilities in the programs used to be sought and found any problems will be solved.

“This is a welcome decision,” says Karsten Gerloff, president of FSFE. “Like most public agencies trust the European institutions for their daily work largely on free software. It is good to see that Parliament and the Commission at least a little to invest in improving the quality of the programs they use.”

The Directorate General for Informatics (DIGIT) European Commission will steer the audit project. FSFE hopes that the Commission will work closely with the software developers. “The EC must audit results as soon as they announce publicly any improvements and share it contributes to the software developers,” says FSFE. The Parliament further 500,000 euros for the development of software that EU institutions can communicate encrypted. This project will be based on free software and open standards.
