The concept of software defined network (SDN) originally meant that the transport layer and the control layer of the network strictly separated are needed. This amounted to a separation of hardware and software. It also meant a break with the historical model of proprietary platforms and proprietary control layers. The implementation of an SDN architecture needed to improve the programmability, innovation and flexibility of the network, with the ultimate goal of cost reduction
.
Software Defined Network (SDN) let himself today but not so easy to define more. The definition now extends to “all the new possibilities that software to enhance the value of a network.” Sdn to grow to a call for modification of the network infrastructure. This includes everything from the access to the core of the network, from the user to the data center, from mobile to fixed networks and virtually every layer of the conventional OSI model. Because of these somewhat divergent ideals, it becomes increasingly difficult to speak in general terms about sdn and make sure that everyone is talking about the same thing.
The lack of a clear and universal definition of sdn, is not as problematic. Indeed, it is possible to identify a number of general themes. Further analysis shows that these themes we can divide into three camps sdn ‘: operators, pragmatists and purists
Operators
Operators. want an end to operational challenges and issues surrounding the management of technology from multiple vendors, something the industry for many years struggling. This camp is trying from the perspective of the network operator to find a solution to the traditional problem of the management of technology from various suppliers and ensuring quality of service. Operators are generally aware of the growing trend of ‘openness’. They see this as an opportunity to build on existing solutions. You could say that operators sdn see if the promise of a truly effective management of multiple vendor platforms and guarantee a better quality of connections
The pragmatists
pragmatists adopt a hybrid approach. They find that it is time for change, but also consider the potential impact on their existing network. In their view, have proven – or in some cases new ‘open’ – interfaces with existing distributed control layers still communicate a place within the network. This view reinforces their desire to create a thriving ecosystem of applications with added value by recourse to abstraction and northbound (toward OSS / BSS) interface modifications
The purists
Purists maintain the historical definition of sdn. Most of them are in favor of a strict separation of the transport layer and control layer. To achieve this, they use Open Flow southbound as open (to the network elements) protocol. A complete and correct application of the purist definition of sdn could result in a real network revolution – a decisive moment in the history of network
Gros of the visions
sdn course ultimately represents all these things and there are also other camps and ideals that fall into different categories. However, the above three classifications represent the majority of views within the market.
As mentioned, an exact definition of sdn not so important. A clear understanding of the problems it tries to solve is, however, important, as are the risks that operators are willing to take to achieve the intended benefits. A comprehensive solution sdn accommodate all these aspects and allows users to switch camp as the business demands it.
And what is sdn to my idea? It is both a concept and an ideology. Sdn represents an important turning point in the network industry and is totally different from anything we’ve seen before. And now hetjo your turn to throw your weight into the battle. Do you belong to one of three sdn camps? Whether you identify with a group that is not yet been addressed?
