First archaeologist, later software engineer – Metronieuws.nl

The University of Amsterdam (HVA) is highly educated unemployed retrained as a software engineer. Project leader Ronald Kleijn.

Make IT Work called the project. Why think you need this?

In and around Amsterdam have relatively many highly educated people without a job. On the other side are desperate numerous businesses to ICT professionals.

In this field, there are currently in the region some 12,000 vacancies. On the initiative of the Amsterdam Economic Board has therefore begun the regionalization plan “Advancing talent ‘and’ Make IT Work ‘is part of that. The aim is to 180 highly qualified without a specific IT background to retrain as a software engineer.

You give a couple of years science lesson on the HvA. Mark your students during their studies are approached by companies?

That certainly happens. Many students have a job alongside their studies already in that area. I feed also talks regularly with companies that wish to work with us. Everything to as quickly as possible to get in touch with upcoming ICT talent.

Regular students receive software engineering already offered a job during their studies by companies where they work placement or execute commands. Fortunately, most of them nowadays will first finish their studies. That was ten years ago, yet different, but now see students and businesses or the value of a degree.

When they which are issued, most incidentally already have a job in my pocket.

I studied Communications. Eight you fit me to join?

If you are motivated enough and have the insight to be able to program, then you should certainly succeed. There are plenty of examples of people with communications, archeology or human resources on their resumes by companies are retrained to ICT’er.

However, what specific features you should have as a software engineer at the Started to?

It is often puzzles you’re working on, so a little analytical ability is still a requirement. You have to like to find solutions to problems and other issues.

The courses we voorschotelen students focus on coding and translating needs into a product proposal. You learn for example, designing a program. Also going to get on the information from databases, and how you can link things together.

The first five months are dominated by theory we treat during lectures. The cost is half funded by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment, the affiliated IT companies and the HvA.

On the student we require a financial contribution of $ 1,000. An important reason for this is that we want to make sure we attract serious people. Then follow six months with an employer where in addition you get one day a week at the HvA lesson. You will also receive salary.

Does anyone with a college diploma or university background welcome?

You can register from today at www.hva.nl/ makeitwork, but there is a selection at the gate. We do this using an online tool that we have created in collaboration with a recruitment agency. Indeed, it is quite a tough course and the story we want people to remember.

Who signs up, following a number of tests in the field of personality and intelligence. We work through a knockout system. Pick up one of the tests do not, you fall off.

The next step is an employers market. Students and companies that have committed themselves to this initiative come into contact with each other. Is there a click, then the signing of a letter of intent. Students who do their best and get the dust below the knee, are thus assured of an employment agreement.

But you aim it specifically at young people, right?

The recruitment indeed was directed at this target group, because we expect there is the greatest need retraining. Nevertheless, people aged 30 and older also respond, if they already have completed a study
